Preparing for Lab - Exploring Carbohydrates
Monday 10-31-2011/Tuesday 11-1-2011. Homework was collected in alphabetical order. Students met with teacher one on one to go over questions regarding the homework and any else needed regarding work. Quiz results were handed back. Students who need to and want to have an opportunity to improve their scores focusing only on the terms they did not know and they can retake the abbreviated quiz either orally, on paper or on the net.
Students spent time on the Blog reviewing structure and function of the digestive organs through interactive sites using the net books. Students also visited the scientific thinking site to participate in two brain exercises listed on the Blog posted 10-29-2011. Students also completed Mission #1 on Rice Universities site Med Myst. Students will be handing in their mission logs from the mission by Friday. Students chose 11-07-2011 as the date for their next vocabulary quiz.
Students can visit the Quia web page and play the review games for both the Vocabulary List #2 and The Digestive Tract to prepare for the upcoming quiz and test. URL's below are active links to the activity on the Quia site.

Wednesday and Thursday all classes - Students wrote down their homework in their daily planner or homework assignment notebook due Friday 10-28 if you had class on Wednesday or Monday 10-31 if you have Thursday class - The homework which we will begin in class are the answers to the questions on - Moving through the digestive track - this will add to our debriefing on the lab Moving right along where students moved an oil tennis ball through a plastic sleeve that was the length of our digestive tracks. This was a simulation on how food moves through the digestive track and to highlight the length of that system. We will also talk about how mother nature packed that into the human body to focus on a central construct in science concerning structure and functions. The link that follows is to the homework directions and questions:

We wrote our next ten vocabulary terms for our next quiz in the back of our science notebook and they are:
11. Homeostasis; 12. solute; 13. solvent; 14. solution; 15. solubility; 16. biology; 17. levels of organization; 18. peristalsis; 19. digestion; 20. mucus
To be successful on vocabulary Quizzes:
1. STUDY!
2. SEARCH DEFINITIONS FOR "KEY WORDS!" STUDY USING THE KEY WORDS. PLAY QUIA GAMES AS A FORM OF REVIEW AND PRACTICE FOR THE UPCOMING QUIZ - REMEMBER THERE IS A TIME LOG THAT WILL REFLECT HOW MUCH TIME YOU SPENT PRACTICING!
3. MAKE FLASH CARDS OF YOUR OWN, PRACTICE WITH A CLASSMATE.
Students returned to Interactive Body and Deep Brain Simulation websites to finish off viewing of the material we started last class.
Week of October 24-October 28
Monday and Tuesday Classwork All Classes - Today all students should have their Quia sign on and password. We went over the taking of their first quiz on Quia. Everyone should be prepared because they have been preparing for this Quiz for over three weeks. For all "B"classes the data trend revealed that students were not studying and were not prepared. Students were informed for three weeks that a "pop" quiz was coming! Students were provided with a hard copy study guide and shown how they could print out one for themselves. Students were given class time to play the Quia games to help them study for and be prepared for the quiz.
Students have Quia accounts so I can see how many are using the study guide tool - the Java review games and how much time they have stayed on the site to review. These time logs reveal that students are not spending enough time preparing for the quiz and that is directly related to how they perform.
We went over a quicker way to study by focusing on only key words in a definition versus trying to memorize the entire thing. Students will be taught to highlight the important terms on their study guide and try studying and preparing for the next test that way.
HOMEWORK - Students are to study the vocabulary to take the vocabulary quiz on Wednesday when they come into class.
Also in class we will visit two interactive that are on my blog the first is the Interactive Body and the second was Deep Brain Simulation. Both of these can be found in the Post dated September 10th - under activities and interactive -
Interactive Body -
Create a visual of where the - organs, muscles, skeleton, nervous system - and its component parts are located and what they look like in the human body.man
Brain Simulation -
Help Dr. Vanessa Mei cut, probe and drill her way to helping her patient cope with a movement disorder through brain surgery!
Week of October 17, 2011
Monday and Tuesday Classwork All Classes will complete the lab - "A Tasty Solution"
- data collected for all three trials
- graph of data properly constructed on the back
- article read and selectively highlighted ( answers to Analysis/Conclusion number 3 are to be highlighted on the article before the answers are written into the data table)
Both the lab write up and the highlighted article are to be handed in. If the lab is not completed in class it is to be completed for homework. Due the next class for Monday - that is Wednesday. For Tuesday that is Thursday.
Students wrote down their Quia user name and password and used these to sign in into their student Quia account created by me to play the vocabulary review games in preparation for the quiz later this week. Last week students received a hard copy as a study guide.
Week of October 11, 2011
Classwork - Today and tomorrow in class 10-11/10-12 students will be asked to fill in their homework assignment notebook with homework for this week - Homework study class notes and vocabulary in their science notebook.
Students have been presenting their organ systems projects to their peers. Students are asked to take notes on the major organs in the systems. Write the specific vocabulary that pertains to the various systems and to write down the fun facts shared by each group about their systems. Each group used their presentation material to create a crossword puzzle on their system which will be used as an assessment piece as we finish off presentation work. The crossword puzzle prepared through collaborative group work was due last Friday 10-07-2011.
Now there is a concern here - please ask your child to view their science notebook and their notes on the systems. Some students are not coming prepared for class - they are not bringing in their notebooks or taking notes. They will need them to complete the crossword puzzles prepared by their peers as part of the assessment work on the systems.
Due by Friday from all students will be their Organ Wanted Posters. Students received the two sheets today to explain the Web Quest Assignment to create an Organ Wanted Poster. Below you can find electronic links to both of these sheets. I have explained the basic requirements for the assignment but have told students to put their individuality and creativity into their work by personalizing it. They can produce electronic posters that can be printed out by using Google Documents, or a Word Document. They can cut and paste onto the electronic poster provided by the link below. This will be their portfolio piece.
In September I had them revisit the concept of Levels of Organization which is:
"Organelles with different functions make up cells; cells with similar functions make up tissues; tissues with the same function will make up organs; organs with like functions make up organ systems; organ systems with different functions mak up an organism."
Students worked collaboratively to produce an poster human "organism" with different organ systems. Then they collaboratively completed a presentation on a specific organ system - groups are still presenting these. Now individually the will create an organ wanted poster to feature a variety of organs made up of cells with a variety of organelles. After organs we will work on cells and their organelles and students can expect a test on cells soon to follow.

9-12-2011 Monday and 9-13-2011 Tuesday Groups A & B - Now that students have their planners they should be filling them in daily with what homework is and what long range assignments( like an anchor activity) have been given as well as dates of tests and quizzes. Occasionally there will be pop quizzes and there will be several performance assessments where students will demonstrate by "doing or performing" a lab skill, lab write up or presentation etc.
A standing homework assignment is to STUDY class notes and vocabulary so that we can talk and discuss material in class with students using the vocabulary and showing evidence of content knowledge of the material we are working on. This will allow them to take ownership of the material and their learning which is an important part of the learning process.
They will also be requested for homework to read and prepare for their next class before they get here so we can use our class time to actively participate in problem based learning, labs and activities. The bulk of the homework should be studying and preparing for the next class.
Classwork - Today in class we talked about some of the daily procedures - everyday students are to come to class with their science notebook, planner and science folder. Being prepared with these three items will earn three points towards daily participation. These points are beginning this week as the planners arrived last week. Each student then can have up to 25 points in participation points per week if it is a full week.
First we filled out our planners together for the standing homework assignment which is to STUDY(see notes above)! Next we opened our science notebook and dated and labeled our notes for today - 9-12-2011 Human Body - Part One - The Digestive System.
Next students picked up a Human Body Textbook which they can keep at home and use one of the classroom set that we will have for our use in the classroom. Students filled in the inside front cover with their name and year noting that the textbook condition is new! I will keep a record of their book numbers but they were asked to record the number of their book in their planner and their science notebook just in case their book got displaced and for some reason did not ave their name in it.
Once students had their books we began today's lesson - pre-assessment of the Human Body Systems and Inquiry 1.1 Human Body Mapping on pages 4 & 5. Together we read pages 1-5 to prepare for the activity.
